Facts You Should Know About Surrogacy

We all know that the embryo attaches itself in the uterine cavity.  This grows to a full term pregnancy and the couple is blessed with a child. But not all couples are lucky. There are a few women who may not be able to experience the joy of getting pregnant.

Who are these women?

• A woman may be born with a genetic problem of absent uterus (RKHS SYNDROME). She has never got her menstrual periods and is a case of primary amenorrhea.  She has a great desire for experiencing motherhood but cannot.
• A woman’s endometrial lining may be damaged permanently because of Infections like Tuberculosis, Pelvic infections. All treatment modalities like Intrauterine PRP injections, stem cell therapy may have been tried and have failed.
• A woman‘s uterus would have been surgically removed because of excessive bleeding at the time of delivery or because of Cancer. She is young and wishes to have her own biologic child.
• A couple undergoes repeated IVF cycles but the woman does not get pregnant. She is likely to have her biological child if she goes in for surrogacy.
• A woman may have intrauterine adhesions because of surgeries in the uterine cavity in the past and the endometrial lining does not grow to the level required for IVF success. How does she have her biologic child?

One of the biggest success stories has been a couple where the woman was born with an absent uterus. We stimulated her and got 4 eggs. They were then fertilized with her husband’s sperms. The surrogate conceived and one had to see/ experience the couple‘s joy at the time of the delivery when they held the baby in their hands.
